Alumni Center Update (Return to top)
Donor Profile
VISIONS asked Bill and Judy Hoefle about their decision to make a gift to the ISU Alumni Center.
As a representative of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Bill Hoefle spent 17 years on the ISU Alumni Association’s Board of Directors. During that time, the idea of building an alumni center was discussed many times, and Bill served on a number of committees to study and evaluate the potential for a new alumni facility. He later served on the building committee for the Alumni Center.
“I saw the need and had the interest in the project,” he said.
Once the Alumni Center became a reality, the Hoefles knew they wanted to make a gift to the building. Their name will be on the president’s suite on the third floor of the office tower.
“We have respect for Jeff [Johnson] and for the leadership he’s brought to the Alumni Association. We are happy to put our name on this office suite,” Bill said.
Judy said Bill’s enthusiasm for the project was contagious. As she stood in the nearly completed facility in early May, she looked out the window at the Iowa State Center and athletics facilities.
“How could this be any better for involving students and alumni?” she said.

Donor Profile
VISIONS spoke with Doug Boyd about the gift his parents, Gayle and the late Jim Boyd, made to the ISU Alumni Center.
“My parents always appreciated the education they received from Iowa State,” Doug said. “They have always supported the Alumni Association, long before the building campaign began. In fact, a gift in my father’s estate was directed to the Alumni Association in general, and then a specific gift was added for the building.”
Jim and Gayle traveled extensively with the Alumni Association’s tour program. They took trips to the Panama Canal, Russia, Egypt, Spain, and other countries in Europe.
Doug said his parents also maintained an association with Iowa State through athletics, and they financially supported the College of Engineering. A 2001 gift went toward the Jim and Gayle Boyd laboratory in mechanical engineering.

Construction Progress Report
As of our magazine deadline in late May, the Alumni Center is nearly complete. Workers are moving furniture into the offices, and finish work is taking place in the public spaces. Exterior work that was not completed due to Iowa's harsh winter and wet spring is now being finalized. There is something new to see in the building every day! The staff is eagerly awaiting a summer move-in date and beginning to plan the official dedication, which will take place Oct. 25, during Homecoming weekend.
Watch our progress!

We're "Livin' the Dream" (Return to top)
Dear Alumni and Friends,
This year’s Homecoming theme will be “Livin’ the Dream.”
And we sure will be at 420 Beach Avenue! Yep, we are moving into our new digs this summer, trying to get settled so that we can start entertaining each of you at your new home…the Iowa State University Alumni Center!
We are grateful to President Geoffroy for giving this project the green light in 2004. Thanks to ISU vice president for business and finance and ISUAA treasurer Warren Madden (’61 industrial engineering) and the ISU Alumni Association Board of Directors for their unwavering support, especially as we sought to find transitional housing for the Association as the Memorial Union went through its renovations. We landed at Fisher-Nickell Hall, and that building has given us some wonderful memories and a chance to have our own identity for the past four years.
We are indebted to Roy (’57 ag journalism) and Bobbi (’06 honorary alumna) Reiman for their lead gift of $9 million that put this project on the fast track, and to the many other donors who collectively contributed more than $4 million to help us appoint, staff, and partially fund some of the landscaping and the future operations endowment for the Center. And then, there are our wonderful colleagues at the ISU Foundation, especially Foundation President Dan Saftig, former Foundation employee Chris Ihle (’98 exercise & sport sci), and current employees Kelly Cizek Hanfelt (’01 sociology/journ & mass com) and Colleen Rogers.
They definitely helped get
the job done!
Thanks to project manager Roger Graden (’77 architecture, ’86 BArch) of ISU Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) and HLKB architects Michael Bechtel (now with Invision
of Des Moines) and Jeff Shaffer (’02 BArch) who listened, planned, guided, and finally designed what we had in our heads. Like our alumni, this facility is timeless. It is a treasure. It is our future. It is, simply stated, forever Iowa State.
I also want to thank our campus construction manager Lynn Burnett of FP&M and the staff of Woodruff Construction, especially Dave Warren and Matt Reimenschneider. Together with Roger, the HLKB staff, interior designer Marcia Melone of FP&M, and a
number of other contractors and campus colleagues, that 30-year dream of a permanent home for alumni, students, and friends of Iowa State University sits atop the hill off of Beach Avenue as a new addition to the Iowa State Center community. I can almost hear the alma mater reflected in this location: “Green hills for thy throne...”
I have to offer special thanks and applause to the loyal, creative, and hard-working staff of the Association. These folks are simply amazing. Not just the current staff, but the many individuals over the years who have worked and volunteered for the Association and held firm to the dream that one day the Alumni Association would have its own facility. Again, that day has come, and you can trust that we will take care of this gift and use it to carry out the Association’s mission of “engaging all alumni, students, and friends in the life, work, and aspiration of Iowa State University.”
I hope you will become a part of this wonderful Alumni Center by including your name on a plaque on the Wall of Alumni and Friends. Writing your name in ISU history is
all about legacy, pride, and
tradition. It’s about the Iowa State family…and that’s you! Let me know if I can help you with your plaque.
I’d also like to mention that you can also start reserving space in the Center for events happening after Nov. 1, 2008. To reserve space, contact Alumni Center events manager Emily Trevillyan (’04 graphic design) at 294-6525 (locally) or toll-free at 877-ISU ALUM. She’ll be happy to help you plan your next event.
Again, come visit us this
fall at 420 Beach Avenue.
The lights are on, the coffee
is brewing, and we’re ready
to spoil you…Cyclone style.
Yours for Iowa State,
Jeff Johnson
President, ISU Alumni Association

The Wall of Alumni and Friends (Return to top)

More than 1,900 individuals have already purchased plaques on The Wall of Alumni and Friends. The Wall, which will be installed on the east side of the new Alumni Center this fall, allows alumni, students, faculty/staff, friends, and fans of Iowa State to permanently list their names or acknowledge, honor, and remember family members, loved ones, and friends by engraving their names and other information on bronze plaques. More than half of the plaques on the inaugural wall have already
been sold. For more information, or to reserve your plaque on the wall, go to www.isualum.org/wall
