The ultimate Cyclone fan

Who IS that guy?

Cyclone fans can picture him in his big yellow foamy cowboy hat, body paint, beads, and stadium horn, making noise in the front row of every game.

After Cy, this Iowa State icon may currently be the most recognizable figure to the average student sports fan. They may not know his name, but Derick Tallman, a junior in accounting and management information systems – named this year’s Ultimate Cyclone Fan – has been supporting the Cyclones his entire life.

Tallman grew up in Ankeny with alumni parents and grandparents. His family had season football tickets, and Tallman experienced tailgating, games, and Cyclone sports camps.

“I remember going to the game when ISU beat Nebraska in 1992,” he says. “It was a really neat game, and seeing that win when I was so young really sparked my interest in Cyclone sports.”

Now Tallman and four of his friends go to all the home football and men’s and women’s basketball games and travel to several road games each year.

“I’m very vocal,” he admits. “I’ll be standing up yelling to the end, no matter what.” Tallman especially loves the energetic atmosphere at Hilton Coliseum.

“When I was a kid, we didn’t have season basketball tickets,” he says. “We would sit around yelling at the TV – it was on mute and we tuned in to Cyclone Radio Network. So it is a really neat experience to be in Hilton now – Hilton is something special
to me.

“I am really excited about Cyclone athletics [right now]. Ten years down the road, I see a lot more exposure. People will say, ‘Oh, Iowa State, yeah!’ and not confuse us with Iowa. They will know that we are the Cyclones.”
