A report from the Board of Directors (return to top)
The work of your ISU Alumni Association board continues, with these key activities and decisions taking place within the past year:

  • The Facilities Committee and the full board have been instrumental in planning for the future ISU Alumni Center. As of the fall 2005 meeting, fundraising totals for the center were at $11.5 million, and two subcommittees of the Facilities Committee were formed: Arts and Artifacts, and Events and Fees.
  • Four new directors were elected by the Association membership to the board in spring 2005: Carol Anderson (’76 PhD home ec ed), Cobb, Wis.; Benjamin Biller (’81 civ engr; ’82 MS), Plano, Texas; Randall Hertz (’76 animal sci), Nevada, Iowa; and Marcia Stahly (’85 business), Naples, Fla. Two new appointed directors were elected by the Board last year (Erin McKeown, SALC president, and David Gieseke, chair of the Alumni Relations Council).
  • Changes to the ISU Alumni Association Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation were approved by the board. The amended Articles were reviewed by ISUAA legal counsel and will be submitted to the Secretary of State, State of Iowa, following approval by the Association’s membership at the annual meeting on May 13.
  • The board approved the following changes in the ISU Alumni Association dues program: annual rate (increase from $45 to $55); New Grad rate (increase from $25 to $30 annually); ISU faculty/staff rate (new category of dues, with an annual rate of $40); Student Alumni Association rate (increase from $15 to $20 annually).
  • A proposal for ISUAA Special Interest Societies was reviewed by the board; the goal of the societies is to encourage diverse groups holding similar interests or characteristics to come together in order to become/remain connected to ISU through the Association.
  • The following outgoing officers, elected directors, and appointed directors of the board were honored: Stan J. Thompson, Karen Albertson, Beverly Fischer Soshea, Barbara Smith Kinney, Ned L. Skinner, Thomas A. Lorenz, Cathy Thompson Curtis, and Andrea Reinhart.
  • The board approved a $30,000 loan to the Association from its operating reserves for a second printing of the Reflections of Iowa State coffeetable book first published in 2000. The loan will be repaid to the reserve account from sales of the book.
  • In August, the board spent two days in a planning and teambuilding retreat, during which they participated in a personal profile assessment, learned more about the changing role of nonprofit boards, set goals for FY06, learned more about the financial reporting process of the Association, and discussed whether to study changing the size of the current board.
  • The board is working toward the completion of the Association’s 2001-2006 strategic plan and beginning the process to draft the next strategic plan, which will become effective in July 2006.

Students honored with Association scholarships (return to top)
Students were honored this spring with a number of scholarships presented by the ISU Alumni Association and affiliated alumni clubs.

The most prestigious award is the Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award. Established in 1968, the award is named for Wallace E. “Red” Barron (’28), who served as director of alumni affairs at Iowa State from 1937 to 1968.

Barron Award recipients will be honored at the all-university Student Scholars and Leaders Recognition Ceremony on April 2. Awardees will also receive official ISU rings at the spring Ring Ceremony on April 25.
