Wall of Alumni and Friends plaques tell unique ISU stories (Return to top)

Dear Iowa Staters:

Wow! The new ISU Alumni Center is absolutely beautiful! The construction crew has nearly finished interior and exterior work, and the staff has moved in. We are getting everything ready for your visits and the Oct. 25th (Homecoming) dedication. During Jeff JohnsonHomecoming weekend, we will also unveil the Cyclone Tower, donated by Roy (’57 ag journalism) and Bobbi (’06 honorary alumna) Reiman of Greendale, Wis.; a bronze sculpture of Cy, funded by Michael (’59 chemical engineering) and Jean (’60 zoology) Steffenson of the Quad Cities (Mike was actually Cy as a student); and the Art in State Buildings mural, designed by Clint Hanson (’87 graphic design) of Des Moines.

On top of all of this, we will also unveil the inaugural Wall of Alumni and Friends, a project that has sparked conversation among families and friends, reconnected alumni to Iowa State, generated genealogy work, and evoked genuine expressions of Cyclone passion, loyalty, and pride. To date, we’ve already sold approximately 3,000 of the 3,776 plaques on the
inaugural wall.

I can’t believe the folks we are hearing from who have been away and out of touch for so long. These folks are talking to us, becoming members, telling their stories, and thanking us for giving them this opportunity to honor loved ones, family members, friends, and associates. Masons have poured the inaugural Wall (located on the east side of the ISU Alumni Center), plaques are being reviewed by purchasers, and the firm we commissioned to cast the plaques is ready to get them installed.

One alumna purchased 15 plaques representing the
members of her family that attended and/or graduated from Iowa State. The earliest year of attendance in this family dates back to 1893. A number of spouses who met at Iowa State have purchased plaques. Many folks purchased plaques honoring their parents, who did not have an opportunity to attend college but became die-hard Cyclone fans. Many purchasers represent second, third, fourth, and fifth generation Iowa Staters, and they made sure the Wall acknowledges their many years of Iowa State connections. Then there are the alumni who were friends at Iowa State, in the band, sororities or fraternities, roommates, etc. who wanted to be sure their names were on the Wall side-by-side. In other words, the list of reasons for making purchases is as long as the wall itself.

It is great to see how this project is already bringing the ISU Alumni Center to life and connecting Iowa Staters more closely to each other and to the university. Here are a few Wall statistics (as of Aug. 15) that you might find interesting:

  • Plaque purchasers living in Iowa: 41%
  • Plaque purchasers living outside of Iowa: 59%
  • Plaque purchasers living outside the U.S.: 3%
  • Range of plaques by degree year: 1870-2011
  • Number of states represented on the Wall: 47
  • Number of countries represented on the Wall: 24
  • First purchaser: Maynard Krug (’76 indust admin)
  • 1000th plaque purchaser: Mary Newton (’56 dietetics)
  • 2000th plaque purchaser: Karen Blockhus (’88 consumer food sci)

If you haven’t yet purchased a plaque for the Wall, there is still time! Approximately 700 plaques still remain on the inaugural Wall. Call us toll-free at 877-ISU-ALUM (locally at 294-6525) or go online to www.isualum.org/wall. Even if you’ve already purchased your plaque, consider pur-chasing another one to honor a family member, former professor, or someone special to Iowa State like sculptor Christian Petersen or former football coach Clyde Williams. (My wife, Peggy, and I purchased plaques to honor George Washington Carver and Jack Trice.) This Wall is about all Iowa Staters – living and deceased. The Wall will become a part of Iowa State history, telling stories about the many Iowa Staters who have made Iowa State the excellent university we have all come to love and respect.

Yours for Iowa State,

We've moved! (Return to top)

moving box

At long last, the move into the new ISU Alumni Center is complete! Alumni Association staff members moved into their offices the week of July 7 and began the process of unpacking boxes and finding a place for everything in their new home-away-from-home. While construction was still being completed on the Center’s interior as we went to press in August, the staff is settled in and welcoming visitors. Still to come is final exterior work, landscaping, artwork, and displays. Please feel free to stop by next time you’re in Ames!

Lifelong learning program expands
The ISU Alumni Association learned this summer that its College for Seniors program had received a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation. The program will now be known as the College for Seniors Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Iowa State University.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute LogoISU’s College for Seniors is a lifelong learning program established in 1993 for individuals aged 50 and older in the central Iowa area. Most courses will be held this fall at the new ISU Alumni Center, but some courses are held elsewhere in Ames and in Des Moines.

The Bernard Osher Foundation, a 30-year-old philanthropic organization headquartered in San Francisco, Calif., supports higher education and the arts. The Foundation supports a growing national network of lifelong learning institutes for seasoned adults located at more than 120 colleges and universities coast to coast.

Current and future learners are invited to become charter members of Iowa State’s new College for Seniors Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. In addition to stimulating courses, there will be special “members-only” events.

Lisa LyLisa Ly is new ISUAA designer
Lisa Ly joined the Alumni Association staff in July 2008 as a full-time graphic designer. A 2006 graduate of ISU’s graphic design program, Lisa interned at Bemporad Baranowski Marketing Group in New York City. As a student, she worked at the Iowa State Daily, Ethos magazine, and Uhuru magazine. She also worked one semester as a graphic design intern for the ISU Alumni Association. She was named a Top 25 Iowa Emerging Artist for the Des Moines Arts Festival in 2007.

Career Management Service connects
job-seekers, employers

job seekerWhat is ISU Career Management Service?
Iowa State Career Management Service or “ISU CMS” is an online career management system that allows alumni and students to easily connect with employers. ISU CMS allows you to review and apply directly for full-time positions. Through ISU CMS, you manage your own online account and submit resumes for job postings. It’s easy to use AND it’s free to all alumni. All ISU colleges are connected to the CMS system except Veterinary Medicine, which has its own unique system.

How do I access CMS?
Accessing CMS is easy. Go to www.career.iastate.edu, and click on the link to your college career services office. Next, click on the alumni link followed by the CMS/job opening link until the system allows you to register as a user. It’s easy and well worth your time if you are looking for a job. All employers are directed
to post jobs on CMS when they are looking for experienced hires.

How do I post jobs for my company?
To post a job, go to www.career.iastate.edu, click on the appropriate college, and go to “employer” instead of “alumni.” Posting jobs is FREE for employers as well. The system also allows employers to sign up for career-related events at ISU such as career fairs and leadership activities.

What if I have questions?
Questions should be directed to your college’s career service office. Just go to www.career.iastate.edu, click on the appropriate college, and you will find the phone number listed on the homepage.

The ISU Career Management Service provides one more oppor-tunity for alumni to stay connected to Iowa State University!
