Alumni Center update (Return to top)

Construction progress report: The summer months have allowed progress on the Alumni Center to accelerate. As of July 15, the ballroom floor has been poured, and contractors will be pouring more floors within the next few weeks, mainly in the office tower and meeting areas. The interior masonry has begun, and exterior brickwork should be starting soon. In August, interior walls will be framed up, and the process will begin to install interior plumbing and heating/ventilation/air conditioning. By the time you read this in September, we will begin to see exterior stone, framing for exterior walls – and the roof should even be on the building! The goal, of course, is to have the entire building enclosed by winter.

Agatha and George Burnet

Donor profile
VISIONS asked Iowa State alumni and emeritus faculty members George and Agatha Huepenbecker Burnet about their decision to make a gift to the ISU Alumni Center.

“Both of us early on became life members of the Alumni Association. And now we’re sustaining life members because we believe in it,” said Agatha. “We think it’s important to stay in touch with our former students and colleagues. We delight in what they’ve accomplished. And we’d like to celebrate that.”

“The Alumni Association really is the lifeblood of the university,” said George.

“I think back to my early years on the faculty and the people I identified with the alumni activities. Red Barron [executive director of the ISUAA from 1932 to 1968] would come over to Chemical Engineering every spring and give an hour-long seminar to our senior class as they were preparing for graduation and employment, and by the end of the hour they could hardly wait to sign up.”

“I think [our support of the Alumni Center] ‘living room’ sort of fits with our association with the alumni of this university,” said Agatha. “Both of us have been very active in Alumni Association events, particularly the ones with the 50-year reunions. We get such joy out of going to those because we’ve been on the campus long enough to know many of the previous faculty members here. When alums come back, they want to talk about their old professors… and we’re likely to have known them! It’s just fun to see alums come back and be so excited about the university campus and so interested in what’s been happening.”

“We’ve both got roots here at the university and in Ames that go down so deep that the idea of moving or settling elsewhere was never an option for us,” George said.

“We’ve been watching that building go up,” Agatha added. “It’s a beautiful spot for it. I think it’s going to be a wonderful addition to the university, and it will mean a lot to alumni.”

Loyalty and membership go hand-in-hand (Return to top)

Dear Members:

Jeff JohnsonEight years ago when I came to Iowa State, I found an alumni organization that was extremely humble, highly achieving, and a solid example of excellence on many fronts – but not necessarily telling its story to the fullest and reaching heights it was worthy of achieving. This humility is an endearing quality. It actually defines what it means to be an Iowan, and it is also deeply rooted in our institution’s long-standing commitment to its land-grant heritage. Your Alumni Association staff and board are not just spectators to and communicators of Iowa State’s achievements and opportunities: We are goal-oriented and focused squarely on helping Iowa State and Iowa Staters live up to their full potentials.

I knew Iowa Staters were loyal, but Association membership numbers did not reflect that reality. So a few years ago, the Alumni Association embarked on a membership campaign to better align loyalty with membership. This campaign also aspired to move Iowa State’s membership ranking to No. 2 in the Big 12 . You know the results: We reached our goal of 50,000 dues-paying members and that No. 2 ranking! I truly believe that loyalty and Association membership go hand-in-hand.

Here are four phrases I hear often from alumni, students, and friends of Iowa State:

- I am proud to be an Iowa Stater.
- I’m a loyal Cyclone.
- I bleed Cardinal and Gold.
- My family’s legacy with Iowa State goes back X generations.

Hearing these phrases over and over, my personal goal, and the goal of your Association board and staff, is to do one thing over the next few years: Move your Association to the top membership spot in the Big 12 Conference. What will that require? What will it mean? It means we need to grow to 75,000 members. We will do this strategically and in the right way. Please know by kicking off our second membership campaign this fall to grow to 55,000 members by 2010, we will not badger folks to join, but we will be persistent. Second, we want membership to be meaningful, not just numbers. So we need you, our current members, to be active, highly communicative and honest with us. We want you to let us know what you think about the direction Iowa State is going, express your concerns and your congratulations, and ensure Iowa State is positioned for excellence for years to come. The relationship and partnership you have with this university is for life. And a strong alumni association positioned with an excellent university means your degree increases in value and great faculty and students remain attracted to Iowa State.

Now, here’s the ask:
1. Please, if you are an annual member, keep renewing your membership, or consider up-grading to a life membership. You are very important to Iowa State! And your membership will help us maintain our current ranking.

2. Ask yourself: Are all the members of my family, who graduated from Iowa State, members? If not, please urge them to transition their loyalty to membership. I’ll bet they have said one or all of the four phrases I listed earlier.

3. Now here is the big one: Every member sign up one member. Just think about what this would do. We could jump overnight from 50,000 to 100,000 members. After you picked me up off the floor, I would join with you in celebration! I really have a dream that this will happen.

In closing, I want you to know that the names of all current Alumni Association members will be listed in the new ISU Alumni Center, which is scheduled to open next spring and be dedicated at Homecoming 2008. I really want to see your name and the names of all of your family members listed, as well as your friends and co-workers. Get them signed up…today!

Thanks for doing your part and saying YES to this very realistic, achievable challenge.

Yours for Iowa State,
Jeff Johnson signature

Alumni Association announces three new programs (Return to top)

In recent months, the ISU Alumni Association Board of Directors approved the creation or transition of three new programs:

The Young Alumni Council was recently created to engage and maintain relationships with graduates of the past 10 years. The council, in its inaugural year, consists of 14 young alumni from all across the country and two current students. Targeting alumni
immediately after graduation will lead to a stronger tie to Iowa State and the Alumni Association. Young alumni will be the key to future volunteerism, membership, enrollment, and advance-ment at Iowa State. With this council, the ISUAA hopes to incor-porate a “young alumni” emphasis in current and future events.

A mainstay of Iowa State, the ISU Retirees Association is now a program of the Alumni Association. Retirees, spouses, and surviving spouses of retirees meet monthly for social and educational programs, in addition to spring and holiday events. The annual Memorial Day Ceremony, ISU Cemetery, and the ISU Diplomats program are also responsibilities of the Retirees Association.

Since 1993, Iowa State’s College for Seniors has provided a program of life-long learning for all persons “age 50 and better” who have the desire to continue to expand their knowledge. Students travel from across the state of Iowa to attend fall, winter, and spring courses taught by current and retired faculty and others with expertise in the respective courses. The Alumni Association took over administrative responsibility for the program last year.

Connect with ISU alumni (Return to top)

Are you missing old friends? Want to connect with Iowa Staters in your area? Here are just a few ways to connect with other alumni:

- Clubs Find a club in your area by logging on to www.isualum.org/clubs. Or call Cory Hanson at 1-877-ISU-ALUM.

- Special Interest Societies Were you part of an organization as a student? Are you interested in reconnecting with alumni who share your interests? Alumni who participated in specific activities or shared similar characteristics or interests while attending ISU now have the opportunity to form Special Interest Societies. Currently established societies include Alumni Band, VEISHEA, Iowa State Daily, Entrepreneurs, Greenlee School, Cardinal Key and Mortar Board, and Oak-Elm Hall. For information, contact Julie Larson at jlarson@alumni.iastate.edu or go to www.isualum.org/societies
