A tangled Web
Trevillyan begins as full-time program and design assistant
Homecoming 2005: Igniting Cyclone Pride
Honors and Awards 2005
A tangled Web (return to top)
This summer, we discovered a dirty little secret about our Alumni Association’s Web server: We weren’t the only ones using it.
It seems a hacker got into the machine because it had some extra space available – space upon which things like movies and music could be illegally stored and then shared over the Internet. In this day and age, I’m told, crimes like these are fairly common.
But that fact didn’t make the incident any less unsettling to me or to our Alumni Association staff, who immediately began working with our campus colleagues in Information Technology Services to resolve the issue and to plan our strategy for moving forward. The first step was notifying those individuals
who had entered their credit card numbers on this
system when they purchased merchandise or services on our Web site and contacting individuals who had entered their Social Security numbers on the system. Even though it didn’t seem the hacker was
after that kind of information, we felt it was important to notify those 3,359 people as quickly as possible so that they could take action to fully
protect themselves. I know it is an uneasy feeling to receive word that your personal information was potentially exposed, and I want to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to those who were
affected.
In the process of dealing with the server hacking, it
quickly became apparent to me that crimes such as these are now a harsh reality of our Web-loving culture. I began searching out articles on the subject and read about similar, much larger incidents that occurred around the same time. I found that the
University of Connecticut, the University of Southern
California, and the University of Iowa bookstore had also been hacked and had done a masterful job of contacting their constituents, further investigating the matter, and bringing back online a more secure process. Each entity is back in business.
You can be assured that your Alumni Association will move forward with the same diligence and attention
to detail to bring back a Web site that offers the conveniences and high quality services our online customers and friends have come to expect, along with the highest level of security and confidence.
Our staff has worked with the university to secure a firm that can offer the services we need in the most
secure environment. We have concluded that this means our server will no longer be housed in Fisher-Nickell Hall.
I am happy to announce that we have formed an exciting new partnership with Global Reach, an Ames
company founded in 1995 and led by alumnus Iacovos
Zachariades. Global Reach serves more than 400 companies representing a wide range of industries, including the State of Iowa treasurer, Civil Air Patrol Headquarters, and ISU Technology Transfer, and has become one of the largest and most respected
technology firms in Iowa. In fact, Global Reach’s e-commerce application was recognized as the 2004 “Product of the Year” by Software and
Information Technology of Iowa.
We are confident that, with the help of our friends at
Global Reach, we will be able to provide Iowa Staters with improved service and vastly improved security when doing business on our Web
site from now on. Check out our new site at www.isualum.org, now powered by Global Reach. Happy – and more importantly, safe – surfing!
Yours for Iowa State,
Jeff Johnson
President, ISU Alumni Association
Trevillyan begins as full-time program and design assistant (return to top)
Emily Trevillyan (’04 graphic design), the ISU Alumni
Association’s newest staff member, is a familiar face within the organization.
As a student, Trevillyan worked with the Association
for nearly four years, designing flyers, posters, T-shirts, invitations, and programs as well as arranging
flowers and assisting with decorations for events. She began working for the ISUAA full time in July
2005. In her dual role as program and design assistant, Emily works half time in events planning and implementation and half time in communications.
“The addition of Emily to our staff will greatly enhance the look and feel of our events and publications,” said Jeff Johnson, ISUAA president. “We are thrilled to have someone of Emily’s talent on board.”
